Internship stipends

Types of stipends

Thanks to the generosity of alumni and other friends of The Journalism Program, we can offer two types of stipend support:

  • Stipends named for the donors who made them possible and have specific purposes: The Ellen Cannon internship; the J.L. Miller internship; and the Bill Fleischman internship.
  • General stipends intended to defray transportation costs (daily driving to, during and from the internship); housing, in some cases; and other costs. Funding for these stipends come from a general internship fund created by many donors over the years. It is informally called the Dennis Jackson internship fund in honor of a former UD professor.

Named stipends

‚ÄčThe Ellen Cannon internship, created by alumna Ellen Cannon, supports a News Journal business internship in fall and spring semesters ($600/semester) and during the summer. ($1,000). Learn more about at the Cannon internship, and the woman who made it possible.

The J.L. Miller internship, named in honor of alumnus J.L. Miller, supports an internship ($1,000) at a Delaware publication by a Delaware resident. Learn more about the Miller internship, and the man who made it possible.

The Bill Fleischman internship, named in honor of former Philadelphia sports writer and former UD journalism professor Bill Fleischman, supports a summer internship ($1,000) that focuses on sports or editing. A look at the Fleischman internship, and the donors who made it possible.

How to apply for a stipend

The form you submit for internship credit will ask whether you're seeking a stipend to support the internship, which cannot be taken for professional writing credit. You'll be asked these questions:

  • which of the stipends you are applying for;
  • where you'll be doing the internship;
  • what you'll be doing during the internship, which must be journalistic in nature, not public relations or advertising;
  • what expenses you need help to pay;
  • how much of a stipend you're requesting.
